Right Wingers Promise To Block Hate Crimes Protections For Gays

Physical attacks on people based on their sexual orientation will join the list of federal hate crimes in a major expansion of the civil rights-era law Congress approved. Guess who doesn't think gay people deserve protection from hate crimes. That's right! Nearly All GOP Senators oppose the Defense Bill with Hate-Crimes Amendment. As it stands now the law offers protections based on race, color, religion and national origin. The expanded legislation would cover gender as well as sexual orientation, gender identity and disability.

Tom Price, who heads the GOP conservative caucus, complained that the expansion of hate crimes legislation amounted to "thought crimes," and he labeled the bill's passage – tied to a defense bill – an "absolute disgrace."

House Minority Leader John Boehner claims that the notion that immutable characteristics should be protected under hate crimes laws and sexual orientation in not an immutable characteristic... You know like religion!

Speaking of religion Tony Perkins, president of the conservative Family Research Council, said the measure was "part of a radical social agenda that could ultimately silence Christians". Ummmm, Tony... You're insane!
