A Fortune Magazine investigation reveal today that the ATF (The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms) never intentionally allowed guns to fall into the hands of Mexican drug cartels. Instead the report shows that five law-enforcement agents directly involved in "Fast and Furious" tell Fortune that the ATF had no such tactic. The six month Fortune investigation then says that in fact The ATF tried to stop this flow guns and/or seized weapons whenever they could but were handcuffed by uncooperative prosecutors and weak gun laws.
While it is true the guns used by Mexican bandits to attack an elite U.S. Border Patrol unit and kill agent named Brian Terry were purchased by "Fast and Furious" suspects it is equally true that the agents weren't allowed to take back the guns or arrest the straw buyers that sold them to the Mexican bandits that used them!!!!
It turns out that Eric Holder's U.S. Attorney's office a list of 31 suspects they wanted to arrest, with 46 pages outlining their illegal acts but prosecutors claimed the agents had insufficient grounds to seize the guns or arrest the suspects.
Furthermore Fortune's investigation of 2,000 pages of confidential ATF documents and interviewed 39 people reveals that the public case alleging that either Eric holder, the U.S. Attorney's office or the ATF walked guns is replete with distortions, errors, partial truths, and even some outright lies.
All this has come to light today thanks to Fortunes investigation and still Rep. Darrell Issa and his fellow Republicans are still going through with the contempt of Congress vote against Attorney General Eric Holder tomorrow.
While it is all very confusing there is one thing I do know…. Every right winger, every conservative talking head, every dittohead, everyone on Fox News, every 2nd amendment nut, every whacko NRA idiot, every gun rights pandering GOP congressman and most of all Darrell Issa who drummed up this fake controversy and salivated like dogs at the prospect of holding the U.S. Attorney General in contempt owes the American people and Eric Holder one huge fucking apology!
In the Fortune article written by Katherine Eban I think the words that best sum up the "scandal" are these:
Irony abounds when it comes to the Fast and Furious scandal. But the ultimate irony is this: Republicans who support the National Rifle Association and its attempts to weaken gun laws are lambasting ATF agents for not seizing enough weapons—ones that, in this case, prosecutors deemed to be legal.Nuff said.
