Miami-Dade School Board Sends Message To First Lady: STAY OUT!

Republican members of the Miami-Dade School Board in Florida has, in no uncertain terms, told First Lady Michelle Obama To: "Stay out of our school!"

Two GOP board members urged that a campaign event at Barbara Goleman Senior High in Miami Lakes be cancelled and questioned whiter it was legal for Michelle Obama to lease out and hold a political event at the school.

Board member Carlos Curbelo, who has worked as a Republican strategist, wrote in the letter to the board's attorney “Allowing the first lady of the United States to use one of our schools explicitly to benefit the president’s reelection campaign is inappropriate and sends the wrong message to our students, employees, and to taxpayers – even if the president’s campaign is willing to pay for all costs resulting from the event,”.

Fellow board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla, who is is running for state House as a Republican, said: “The use of public schools whose only focus should be to educate our children for political gain is downright wrong. Don’t these liberals have boundaries? Our schools are places for learning, not places for politicking.”

By the way, all this is happening while Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney is set to hold a town hall the same day at a high school in another swing state, Colorado…. but I guess that's an entirely different story.

In an effort to put the concerned citizen's tiny tiny minds at ease Miami-Dade's school board attorney, Walter Harvey, said Under School Board policy, all groups, including political, religious and nonprofits, can apply to lease facilities from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Does anyone wonder if the two board members would object to having Christian prayer in their school…? I'm gonna go out on a limb any say that I think they would be all right with "that message" being sent to their students.
