Government Shutdown Countdown

All zeros... Sorry our government is closed for business.
In an effort to defund "The Affordable Care Act" and stop millions from receiving health care Republicans in the Congress have threatened a government shutdown. True to their word the Republicans sent bill after bill after bill to the Senate demanding that they either defund, dismantle or delay what they refer to as "Obamacare". Since a majority of the Senate is comprised of Democrats, who all voted for the ACA, all the bills were voted down.

Now the clock has run out and the first government shutdown in 17 years is underway.

In other news...

Obamacare starts today in spite of the Republican's government shutdown and you can start shopping for your heath care right now.

Good job Republicans! Once again you have managed to achieve nothing while hurting our economy, job creation and reputation.

Obamacare Explained In Two Minutes

Here's a short video made by the Washington Post's Sarah Kliff explaining the Affordable Care Act's new insurance exchanges which open for enrollment October 1.

Questions And Answers About Ted Cruz's Fake Filibuster

Ted Cruz just "spoke" on the Senate floor for 21 hours. There are many questions as to why he did it and to what end. Let's try to answer some of them right now.

Who is Ted Cruz?

Rafael Edward "Ted" Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada on December 22, 1970. He is the junior United States Senator for the state of Texas. He was elected to the senate in 2013. Cruz is a member of the GOP but is often referred to as a "Tea Party Republican".

Did Ted Cruz really speak on the Senate floor for 21 hours?

No. By the Senates rules Cruz was allowed to take breaks as other members of the house asked him "questions" which could last as long as they wanted. Several "Tea Party" members of the house did just this allowing Cruz to rest, and take care of any "activities" that needed tending to.

Was what Cruz did a filibuster?

The speech, which was not technically a filibuster because it did not delay any votes and was instead  labeled an "extended oratory". Though Cruz still referred to it as a filibuster.

It was in essence nothing but political theater.

What did Ted Cruz say his reason was for speaking on the Senate floor for 21 hours?

The Republicans in the Congress passed a bill saying in effect that if funding for Obamacare wasn't cut they would shut down the government. Cruz was claiming his (fake) filibuster was to stop the Senate from voting on the spending bill so no one could strip out the Republicans provision that would defund Obamacare.

What Cruz failed to mention was that procedurally the rules plainly stated that he had to stop his "extended oratory" at 12:00pm as was agreed upon by him and Senate majority leader (and Democrat) Harry Reid. This time was arrived at so the Senate could vote on the bill Cruz was supposedly filibustering.

Therefore even if Cruz had not spoken a word all night it was agreed in advance by him and Reid that the vote would still take place.

What was Cruz's real reason for speaking on the Senate floor for 21 hours then?

Pure ego driven self aggrandizement.  It was nothing more than naked ambition to further his aspirations to be the president.

Did Ted Cruz really compare The Affordable Health Care Act to Nazi Germany and those who agree with the program Nazi sympathizers?

Yes, here is what he said...

"If you go to the 1940s, Nazi Germany. Look, we saw in Britain, Neville Chamberlain, who told the British people, 'Accept the Nazis. Yes, they'll dominate the continent of Europe but that's not our problem. Let's appease them. Why? Because it can't be done. We can't possibly stand against them.'"

Here is a video of him of it thanks to TPMtv...

*This is what they call breaking Godwin's law, also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies.

Did Ted Cruz really read Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham"?

Yes. Here is a video of him doing so...

After Ted Cruz's fake filibuster how did the vote on the Senate bill come out?

After Cruz's epic bladder-busting talk-a-thon the senate voted 100-to-0 to take up the spending bill.

Wait a second… 100 to 0. Doesn't that mean Ted Cruz voted yes on the very bill he was just fake filibustering?

Yes. Yes it does.

Loudmouth Gun Nut Mark Kessler Still Has All His Guns... But Not His Job

After a closed-door disciplinary hearing the council members of Gilberton have now made it official in a 6 to 1 vote that they will fire their town's village idiot and police chief Mark Kessler.

Last month Kessler was suspended after he posted online videos of himself shooting automatic weapons while he spewed profanity-laced tirades about his unrequited love of guns, the Second Amendment and his vitriolic hatred of liberals, minorities, President Obama plus everyone in his administration.

Gilberton council members did not arrived at their decision based solely on Kessler's video rants but also in light of the fact that he was found to be organizing his personal armed, non-government group known as "The Constitution Security Force" whose stated mission is to defend the constitution and the country from tyranny.

Other infractions taken into account concerning Kessler's firing included the allegations that he improperly used a state-administered program to buy discounted tires for his personal vehicle, failed to submit required crime data and made derogatory comments about borough officials

Kessler, while insisting he was simply exercising his constitutional rights in the videos, said the town council's decision was "no surprise… We knew it was coming,".

After hearing the news of his dismissal Kessler stood with his attorney outside his disciplinary hearing and told reporters  that he had been in fact an "excellent police chief" and had "nothing to apologize for". He added that "My message was to wake up the people who are independents to say, `We've had enough and something needs to change, because we're in bad shape all around. Not only here in this little town but across the nation. It's a mess.'"

After Kessler's self serving comments he immediately proceeded to solicit donations from the crowd to "help keep his family afloat financially" during his unpaid suspension, which he said was "really stressful".

Unsurprisingly gun rights activists descended upon the community of about 800 people to show support for Kessler, some carrying flags and displaying weapons. A man carrying a semi-automatic AK-47 named Bob Gardner, who said he belonged to Kessler's "Constitution Security Force", expounded that he thought "Mark has gotten railroaded. He was exercising his First Amendment rights by backing it up with his Second Amendment rights."

Here are some pictures of the "patriots"who showed up to support ex-police chief Mark Kessler...

House Republicans Vote To Cut Food Stamps To Children, Elderly, Disabled By $40 Billion

Capping off a busy week screwing Americans, the Republicans in the House of Representatives just approved sweeping reforms gutting the nation's food stamp program... all in the name of fiscal responsibility. The GOP has vowed to cut some $40 billion in nutrition aid over 10 years starting in 2014. Their proposed cuts would deny millions of starving Americans, who are going through the worst economic disaster since the great depression, their much needed benefits.

The unfortunate truth is that enrollment in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has doubled in the wake of the global recession of 2009 as incomes plummeted (which now average $133 per month) and more Americans qualified for benefits.

Another sad truth is that 83% of SNAP's beneficiaries are children, elderly or disabled.

Despite this the Republicans would still enact their bill all the while claiming it would help more people "find jobs" and stop freeloaders from "sponging" off the taxpayers.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) blathered that "Most people want a job. Most people want to go out and be productive so that they can earn a living, so that they can support a family, so that they can have hope for a more prosperous future. They want what we want."

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) says: "… you can no longer sit on your couch or ride a surfboard like Jason (Greenslate) in California and expect the federal taxpayer to feed you."

And proving Republicans are always ready to quote the bible when it suits them Rep. Steve Southerland (R-Fla.) citied the Book of Genesis preaching that "Work is a blessing."

On top of the brutal cuts to funding the Republicans also insisted the bill include requirements to those enrolled to pass income and asset tests to "prove their poverty". Another measure Republicans insisted the bill include would allow states to require drug testing on those who are qualified to benefit from the program.

Democrats called the House measure a useless assault on America's poor and in need.

Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-Ohio) exclaimed that "Today's exercise is nothing more than a waste of our time and an insult to every American in need". Fudge added that the bill "guts nutrition for those most in need and says to the poor, to hungry children, to the disabled, seniors and our veterans, 'You don't matter, you are not worthy of our help.' They deserve better."

One member of congress, Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.), used a steak, a bottle of vodka and a jar of caviar as props to highlight what she said was hypocritical spending in Congress. She lamented that some members of Congress (Republicans) voting to cut food stamps "travel to foreign countries under the guise of official business. They dine at lavish restaurants eating steak, vodka and even caviar. They receive money to do this. That’s right, they don’t pay out of pocket for these meals… Yet for them, the idea of helping fellow Americans spend less than $5 a day makes their skin crawl”.

The final vote tally was  217 to 210. 217 Republicans voted for the bill while only 15 Republicans voted against it. Not a single Democrat voted for the bill.

The White House has repeatedly said it would veto the House GOP's food stamp demands.

Here are some eye opening and upsetting facts about our country's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits:
76% of SNAP households included a child, an elderly person, or a disabled person.
These vulnerable households receive 83% of all SNAP benefits.
SNAP eligibility is limited to households with gross income of no more than 130% of the federal poverty guideline, but the majority of households have income well below the maximum.
83% of SNAP households have gross income at or below 100% of the poverty guideline ($19,530 for a family of 3 in 2013), and these households receive about 91% of all benefits.
61% of SNAP households have gross income at or below 75% of the poverty guideline ($14,648 for a family of 3 in 2013)
The average SNAP household has a gross monthly income of $744; net monthly income of $338 after the standard deduction and, for certain households, deductions for child care, medical expenses, and shelter costs; and countable resources of $331, such as a bank account.
Error rates for the SNAP Program declined by 57% since FY2000, from 8.91% in FY2000 to a record low of 3.80% in FY2011. The accuracy rate of 96.2% (FY2011) is an all-time program high and is considerably higher than other major benefit programs such as Medicare fee-for-service (91.5%) or Medicare Advantage Part C (88.6%).

House Votes 230-189 To Shut Down The US Government... Republicans Rejoice

Today the Republicans in the House of Representatives passed a stopgap funding bill that will "shut down the government" unless Democrats agree to defund President Barack Obama's health care law.

The House voted 230 to 189 to pass a continuing resolution that would fund the government thru Dec. 15 in exchange for defunding Obamacare, or else face a shutdown once the Sept. 30 fiscal year end passes. All this while the Republicans insist that their bill does nothing to "shut down the government".

Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee., Rep. Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), says: "It simply keeps the lights on in our government," never mentioning that it is conditional on gutting the Affordable Health Care Act.

What Republicans also neglect to mention is that they are planning another vote next week on legislation that would directly tie a one-year delay in Obamacare to raising the debt ceiling.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) made it clear that the main point of the measure was in fact to block the health care law saying "This resolution will also protect the working middle class from the devastating effects of Obamacare. Let's defund this law now, and protect the American people from the economic calamity that we know Obamacare will create."

Cantor never mentioned what economic calamities would be borne out if they were successful in shuting down the government.

Aside from obliterating America's credit rating, stalling our nation's jobs and economic recovery it would additionally send shock waves through the global economy as well.

Some of the other damaging effects of the Republicans bill to shut down the US government are:
Locking in government spending at sequester levels that conflict with the budget passed in the Senate.
Obligations such as Medicare and military benefits would be placed on the backburner
Social Security payments would face delays and new claims would not be processed.
Tax refunds would be delayed, and the IRS won't be able to help if filers need advice.
Pay for U.S. troops would be delayed, and some civilian Defense Department employees would be furloughed.
Bankruptcy and delinquent child support cases would stall.
Federal government offices, programs, museums, zoos and parks would be shuttered.
Federal contractors projects would be delayed because the agencies they work for wouldn't be able to issue the paperwork needed to move forward.
The government wouldn't be able to process new applications causing a backlog plus no one at these federal agencies would be available to answer questions about outstanding federal issues.
Work safety inspectors would stop workplace inspections except in cases of imminent danger.
The State Department will have to halt new passport and visa applications.
The National Institutes of Health would stop taking in new patients and the Centers for Disease Control would halt disease surveillance.
And here's the kicker….
Obamacare would continue even in the event of a shutdown.
This vote marked the 42nd time that House Republicans have voted to repeal Obamacare.

Republicans Claim Obama Planned The Syrian Chemical Attack... And Other Related Conspiracy Theories

After watching President Obama address the country last week as to why America should attack Syria for it's use of chemical weapons I wondered why it is such a hard sell to the Republicans. I understand why the generally "dovish" Democrats would be against striking a country that had not attacked us first (see George Bush v. Iraq). Now in saying that I understand the progressives stance on the  Syria strike let me say that I am completely confounded by the Republicans take on the matter. To say that this kind of military action is the Republicans bread and butter is an understatement. This is where they live and breath. No one in the GOP has ever had any reservations about going into a war with a country that had not posed an imminent threat to us in any way. Under our last president (once again see George Bush v. Iraq) it was the definition of being an American to do so. Remember they even made up a new term calling it a "pre-emptive strike".

So why is it different this time around when we're not even talking about sending in troops?

I did some research to see what the Republicans really think is going on in Syria and I think I may have found the answer to my own question.

Let the conspiracy theories begin…

Yossef Bodansky
Let's start with Yossef Bodansky. Bodansky, who in the 1980s served as a senior consultant for the Department of Defense and the Department of State, asked in an opinion piece "Did the White House Help Plan the Syrian Chemical Attack?" In his article he goes on to say "I've never thought Assad had anything to do with the chemical attacks.  He had absolutely nothing to gain.  In contrast, the Free Syrian Army really had nothing to gain by attacking civilians"

Bodansky then only referring to "numerous sources" without citing who they are says "There is a growing volume of new evidence from numerous sources in the Middle East — mostly affiliated with the Syrian opposition and its sponsors and supporters — which makes a very strong case, based on solid circumstantial evidence, that the August 21, 2013, chemical strike in the Damascus suburbs was indeed a pre-meditated provocation by the Syrian opposition."

In other words with the help of President Obama and his administration the people who were murdered by the chemical attacks in Syria gassed themselves.

* Just so you know Yossef Bodansky, is an Assad sympathizer who has previously suggested that "the 1995 Oklahoma bombing was orchestrated by Iran and that Saddam’s WMDs all ended up in Syria

Rush Limbaugh
Riffing off Bodansky's article, talk show host and celebrity walrus impersonator, Rush Limbaugh wondered aloud if Obama actually conspired with al Qaeda to gas innocent Syrians as a pretext for going to war against Assad.

Limbaugh's exact words were…

Now, if this is right—and I say “IF” in capital letters—if this is right, this is the setup of all time. At any rate, it looks like there was US intel involvement dating a week before the alleged chemical weapons attack in meetings that were anticipating a war-changing event. So we could be looking here at a frame job, a pretty big setup.”

Andrew C. McCarthy
Andrew C. McCarthy, a former Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York notable for leading the 1995 terrorism prosecution against Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, once again going to the Bodansky well had a similar epiphany.

In the National Review Online McCarthy wrote...

"The debate on Syria continues to focus like a laser on exactly the wrong issue — whether Assad used chemical weapons… More disturbing, Yossef Bodansky lays out evidence that the Assad regime’s alleged sarin attack on August 21 was a deception engineered by the mujahideen rebels who, a week earlier, were already anticipating what he describes as “an imminent escalation in the fighting due to ‘a war-changing development’ which would, in turn, lead to a US-led bombing of Syria."

Joe Wilson
Taking another avenue Republican congressman Joe "You Lie" Wilson suggests that President Obama is only pushing the Syria strike to distract from the "scandals" of Benghazi, the IRS and Obamacare.

At a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing last week, where Secretary of State John Kerry was testifying, Wilson pointed to an April 25 letter from the White House that said U.S. intelligence agencies had concluded "with varying degrees of confidence” that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces had used chemical weapons on a small scale. "Why was there no call for military response in April?  Was it delayed to divert attention today from the Benghazi, IRS, NSA scandals; the failure of Obamacare enforcement; the tragedy of the White House-drafted sequestration or the upcoming debt limit vote? Again, why was there no call for military response four months ago when the president's red line was crossed?"

Of course Wilson's point is made all the more laughable since all the supposed "scandals" had already taken place months and years earlier. What difference did a matter of 3 months make?

Jeff Duncan
Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) also brought up some of the House GOP's favorite bogeymen at the same House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.

"I can't discuss the possibility of the U.S. involvement in Syria's civil war without also talking about Benghazi… The administration has a serious credibility issue with the American people, due to the unanswered questions surrounding the terrorist attack in Benghazi almost a year ago. When you factor in the IRS targeting of conservative groups, the AP and James Rosen issues, 'Fast and Furious' and NSA spying programs, bottom line is there's a need for accountability and trust-building from the administration."

All Duncan's points were of course completely off base and irrelevant to the hearing. Fast and furious… Really?

Marco Rubio
Another tactic was taken by Tea Party favorite and Republican Senator for Florida Marco Rubio. His tactic included some ridiculous intellectual gymnastics.

You see two years ago Rubio called on the Obama administration to “stop dithering as innocent Syrians die at the hands of a merciless regime” that “directly acted against the national security interests of the United States”?

Only one year ago Rubio, said in a speech to the Brookings Institution, “The nations in the region see Syria as a test of our continued willingness to lead in the Middle East”? And “If we prove unwilling to provide leadership, they will conclude that we are no longer a reliable security partner”?

Yet on Sept. 4th (only a week ago) Rubio voted in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee opposing the use of force against the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad telling told Fox News that he was “very skeptical” about any planned retaliation against the Aug. 21 chemical attack that killed 1,400 Syrians.

Rubio claims he changed his mind because now it’s just "too late" to do anything. At the same Foreign Relations Committee hearing where John Kerry Testified Rubio stated “What we’re seeing here now is proof and an example of when America ignores these problems, these problems don’t ignore us,”

Glenn Beck
Glenn Beck went completely off the reservation for his reasoning. On his internet/television program (whatever that is) Beck declared that proposed military action against Syria had nothing to do with the use of chemical weapons by President Bashar al-Assad against civilians, but was really all about "oil and money" and the desire to construct a pipeline across Syria on behalf of the nation of Qatar.

The very next day on his radio program, Beck had an entirely new theory about what is really going on and it turns out that the push for military strikes against Syrian is all about covering up for our gun-running operation through Benghazi. Beck explained that the United States was running weapons and missiles to the Syrian rebels through Benghazi and now is afraid that Assad is soon going to defeat the rebels and capture all of the weapons the US had supplied and put them on display for the world to see. As such, the Obama Administration is now claiming that Assad used chemical weapons to provide justification for our effort to try to destroy those weapons and cover up our involvement.

Leaving no stone unturned Beck also touched on the Yossef Bodansky conspiracy theory saying "Why would Assad use chemical weapons? Why? Maybe there's a possibility that he didn't. Maybe there's a possibility that some of the weapons that are being used to do horrible things are weapons that we either lost or helped smuggle. And so this whole thing is about covering the trail of the lost weapons from Benghazi"

Neil Cavuto
As for Fox News anchor Neil Cavuto devoted an entire segment to the possibility that a United States attack on Syria could be a sign of the End Times and that as a result of strikes at Assad's chemical weapons Jesus Christ will return to face off against the Antichrist.

This Syria stuff is way old. I mean Old Testament old. That’s how old I’m talking about. Don’t laugh. Some biblical scholars say it’s all there in black and white.”

The Fox News host invited author Joel Rosenberg to weigh in on the link between the Syrian conflict and the Bible passages, which he said were “uncanny” and “kind of scary.”

These are prophecies more than 2,700 years old, some of them, but they have not actually been fulfilled,” Rosenberg said. “But this prophecy, as you just pointed out, talks about the complete and utter destruction of Damascus. That’s an End Times or eschatological prophecy.”

It’s a very sobering thought to think that a judgment of a city or a country could happen in which an entire city could be wiped out, but that is, in fact, what the Bible is predicting,”.

Cavuto responded with “Amazing. It’s in in there. It’s worth a read.”

Cavuto and Rosenberg did not speculate if one of the current world leaders could be the Antichrist.

The Million Muslim March Vs The Million American March = Epic Fail

This is without a doubt the craziest story of the week... Let us begin.

An organization named The American Muslim Political Action Committee (AMPAC) was granted a permit for the "Million Americans Against Fear" rally on the National Mall on September 11th. The event according to their website was to be known as "The Million Muslim March". All their permits were in place and they were ready to march on 9/11 but when they did people began to notice something wasn't right.

It turns out the people who originally billed the event known as "The Million Muslim March,” and/or “Million American March Against Fear” was not put together by Muslims at all. No, it was conceived and executed by a conspiracy theory fringe group of 9/11 Truthers who were using the platform of a gathering of Muslims for their own agenda.

People also noticed something else when The American Muslim Political Action Committee/Truthers held their "The Million Muslim March” Wednesday on the Mall… less than 30 people showed up to the event. Ouch.

Here are a few pictures of the "Muslim/Truthers" really sad turnout…

Now here's where it gets interesting…

Before "The Million Muslim March” was known to be a ruse and people thought their really was going to be a  million scary Muslims marching in the capitol, bikers from all across America decided that they would not allow this travesty to take place. The bikers decided they would hold a counter rally and created "The Million American March"!

They even created a Facebook page named "2 Million Bikers to D.C. 9-11-2013". On the page they describe the event as "a patriotic event to honor the memory of those lost to us on 9-11-2001." An earlier post on the group's Facebook page said the group changed the theme of this event from a "protest" to a "ride" on purpose!. The bikers then added (all in caps): "BUT WE WILL ADDRESS THEIR LIES! IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THAT ...YOU "MAY" BE ON THE WRONG PAGE....JUST SAYIN."

The 2 Million Bikers to D.C. Ride was explained on their Facebook page that this was the groups "goal" (once again all in caps):
So despite being denied a permit (which sparked outrage on the biker group’s website of course) because the ride would cause major disruption to traffic on a regular workday in Washington, thousands of "patriotic" bikers took to the nation's capital to protest the "Million Muslim March,"!!!!

Now that they were all jacked up and ready to rumble can you even begin to imagine their surprise when they sowed up to the National Mall only to be greeted by around 30 or so old, white, 9/11 Truthers and nary a Muslim to be found. Who were they going to heckle and yell at now!?! Oh no!

Well the "patriotic" bikers didn't let that little inconvenience stop their fun!

The DCist reports that when the bikers encountered the "Truthers" they began shouting shouting "No Sharia law!" "We want to be united in courage." and "False Flag". NBC Washington reports other people were there with signs saying "Muhammad is a liar." and "expose Islam."

One of the "Christian" bikers  noted that the march that was advertised as one that would be attended by one million people, which turned out to be a "lie," in his opinion. "I expect that from Muslims," he added.

Here are some of the "Million Americans" doing our country proud and defending us against…. Ummm…. no one in particular.

Here is a video of the bikers doin' their thang…

In additional news a separate group called Patriots 4 America gathered, calling for President Obama to be impeached.

Pastor Terry Jones Arrested As He Planned To Burn 2,998 Qurans

Everyone's favorite book burning Pastor, Terry Jones, was planning to burn 2,998 of the Muslim holy books today. The pastor claims each copy of the holy book represented every victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

I guess in Jones' mind this would even up the score because every year the people of Iraq symbolically burn in between 112,667–123,284 Bibles for every innocent civilian killed in the Iraqi war that was started under false pretenses by America's President at the time.

Wait… They don't do that? Oh never mind… Let us continue.

Either way Pastor Jones was arrested just as he drove a pickup truck towing a large barbecue style grill filled with kerosene-soaked Qurans to a park for ignition. It was just before what passed as festivities for Jones when Sheriff's deputies in Polk County, Fla., arrested Jones, 61, and his associate pastor, Marvin Sapp Jr., 44.

Both were booked into the Polk County jail for the felony of unlawful conveyance of fuel. Jones was additionally charged with unlawful open-carry of a firearm (a misdemeanor) and Sapp faces a charge of having no valid registration for the trailer.
"What, was I speedin' or something?"
As we all remember Jones is the pastor who gained attention in 2010 when he planned to burn a Quran on the anniversary of 9/11 before he eventually called it off.

Unfortunately his he and his congregation did burn the Muslim holy book in March 2011 and last year he promoted an anti-Muslim film.

Because he knows better Jones repeatedly ignores pleas from the U.S. military asking him not to stage his protests.

Unfortunately all three incidents sparked violence in the Middle East.

The most violent protest happened after the 2011 Quran burning as hundreds of protesters stormed a United Nations compound in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, killing seven people.

"What a wonderful way to commemorate the lives lost on this day 12 year's ago" no one ever said.
