This was played out perfectly on Tuesday when Mississippi held a Republican primary run off between Senator Thad Cochran and Tea Party favorite challenger Chris McDaniel to see who would run in the general election. This run off was set into motion when in an earlier primary held on June 3rd neither candidate received a majority of the vote.
Now being 76 years old and a six term Senator gave Thad Cochran an edge when it came down to running a smart campaign in the run off. Not only did he have big name GOP'ers like Senator John McCain and former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour come in and stump for him against his upstart challenger but he also changed the nature of his ground game. Cochran wisely did this knowing McDaniel hadn't gained any fans with his antics during his first campaign which included sleazy underhanded actions such as:
- Covertly photographing Thad Cochran's dementia stricken wife in a nursing home with the intention to use against him
- Agreeing to be keynote speaker at a gun rights event alongside a Confederate memorabilia store owner who has advocated for racial segregation and then backing out of it when it was highlighted by a state political blog
- Accepting (later returning) a contribution from Carl Ford a Mississippi secessionist who was part of the defense team representing a Klansman convicted in 1998 of murdering a 1960s civil rights leader
- McDaniel also was taped on his syndicated Christian radio show spouting racist epithets against black and Hispanics
Given the racial overtones of the last three of McDaniel's missteps Thad Cochran wisely decided to reach out to the minority community for votes against his Tea Party Rival. It turns out this was a winning strategy since it has been reported that Cochran got an "unusual" boost from African-American voters and other Democrats which in turn propelled him to a decisive win.
This would be where we cue would Rush Limbaugh to intervene with some ugly racist rhetoric... Aaaaand GO!
Radio host, comedy act and human walrus hybrid Rush Limbaugh reacted to Senator Thad Cochran's primary win in Mississippi by calling his supporters "black Uncle Tom voters" saying...
"I wonder what the campaign slogan was in Mississippi the past couple days, Uncle Toms For Thad? I thought it was the worst thing you could do as an African-American, is vote for a Republican."
“Insider Republicans in the Senate bought nine percentage points… from the black Uncle Tom voters in Mississippi. Well, you know what they call Clarence Thomas? Condoleezza Rice? They call them Uncle Toms. The Republicans, these guys that voted for them… Uncle Toms for Thad.”
Listen to the blubbering race baiter here...
So Rush, just who is this "they" that we hear calling African Americans who have reached the pinnacle of their professions racial epithets! All I can say is that when you reference this "they" I haven't a clue who you are talking about? I hear plenty of racism coming out of your mouth... I hear plenty of racism coming out of Tea Partier's mouths... I hear plenty of racism coming out of the religious right's mouths... I hear plenty of racism coming out of Republican's mouths... I hear plenty of racism coming out of conservative's mouths...
So just who is this "they" you are speaking of Rush? You're going to have to be a little more clear and concise when you talking about blatant outspoken racists.
