But the ugliest and most upsetting speech by far was Pam Smith's.
I felt waves of repulsion as I watched it. I was repulsed that the RNC felt it was appropriate to allow it. I was repulsed that the Trump camp thought it was a good strategy to use this woman and her murdered son for political gain. I was repulsed that the woman allowed herself to be positioned onto that stage as a political pawn.
Before I continue let me express that anyone would be hard pressed not to feel Pat Smith's pain as she spoke of her son and his final moments. It would be hard not to sympathize with this woman as she talked of the last time she spoke to her son. That being said Smith has performed this routine several times on command at Fox News. They trotted her out over and over again for every one of the nine times there have been Benghazi investigations and each time she gives the same gut wrenching performance.
For me the hardest part of last night's command performance to come to terms with was what I can only call a rehearsed interaction between Smith and the crowd. The tearful euphoric glee that they reveled in as she called Hillary Clinton a murderer. The shared angst driven revelry they exchanged in calling for her imprisonment. The repeated hate filled shouts of acknowledgment when Smith said the magical words "radical Islamic terrorists" and how Trump would "kill them".
It was almost like watching a classic rock band and their audience singing the lyrics to their favorite song back and forth at the show's encore.
Smith regaled them with the tunes they wanted to hear...
“The tragedy in Benghazi is not about America. I blame Hillary Clinton. I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son,”And...
“Hillary Clinton is a woman, a mother and a grandmother of two. I am a woman, a mother and a grandmother of two. How could she do this to me? How could she do this to any American family?"
Both of these exclamations were met with rousing cheers.
And at the end of her 5 minute regurgitation of grievances both she and the crowd laughed as they shouted the right wing trope of "Hillary for prison!".
Then as Pat Smith left the stage she repeated several times "I want to see her in stripes... I want to see her in stripes" as she waved to the adoring crowd.

One thing to notice is that Smith never looked away from the teleprompter... and she never shed a tear.
In closing let me ask a question. Can you imagine if during the 2004 Democratic National Convention John Kerry trotted out women who had lost their children in the 9-11 terrorist attacks to blame George W. Bush for not acting on the brief he received that read "Bin Laden determined to attack inside the Unied Stated"? Can you imagine if he turned out parents who lost their children in the Iraq War that we knew at the time the Bush administration had lied us into.
Just imagine the reaction the Republicans and the right wing media would have had... And they would have been right.
