Trump responded with this non-answer...
“I’ll answer that question at the right time. I just don’t want to answer it yet.”
This has been Trumps modus operandi over the course of his campaign. When asked about his birther past of whether he believes the President is an American citizen Tump just replies "I don't talk about that anymore". He has denied President Obama's nationality as recently as two weeks ago and a week ago.
The problem is that high ranking members of his campaign have come out in the last week and stated that Trump now believes President Obama was born in the United States. Rudy Giuliani did it Sept 8th while being interviewed by Chris Matthews and Trump's campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway said essentially the same thing while being interviewed on sept. 9th by CNN's Chris Cuomo.
This split in the campaign's assertions and the candidates position has pushed Trump's "birther" past to the front burner again and put the candidate on the spot to answer the question.
So after cable news talking heads chattered about the Post's interview and Trumps "birtherism" all night long the Trump campaign apparently tried to do some damage control and announced that "The Donald", sometime between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00pm, would personally state that he believed President Obama was born in the United States.
The statement from Trump never came.
Instead Jason Miller, the campaign's senior communications adviser, sent out a lengthy release saying that their candidate believed the president was a natural born citizen. In addition to that they once again pushed the lie that Hillary Clinton started "birtherism" and that Donald Trump was a hero for getting the President to produce his birth certificate!!!!
Here is the statement released by the campaign...
"Hillary Clinton's campaign first raised this issue to smear then-candidate Barack Obama in her very nasty, failed 2008 campaign for President. This type of vicious and conniving behavior is straight from the Clinton Playbook. As usual, however, Hillary Clinton was too weak to get an answer.
In 2011, Mr. Trump was finally able to bring this ugly incident to its conclusion by successfully compelling President Obama to release his birth certificate. Mr. Trump did a great service to the President and the country by bringing closure to the issue that Hillary Clinton and her team first raised. Inarguably, Donald J. Trump is a closer. Having successfully obtained President Obama's birth certificate when others could not, Mr. Trump believes that President Obama was born in the United States."
Mr. Trump is now totally focused on bringing jobs back to America, defeating radical Islamic terrorism, taking care of our veterans, introducing school choice opportunities and rebuilding and making our inner cities safe again."
Okay, let me get this straight... The statement first pushes the false narrative about Clinton starting 'birtherism" and then it congratulates Trump for doing everyone "a great service" for being the "closer" who ended "BIRTHERISM"!??!?
What bizzaro world garbage did I just fucking read!?!?!
Until Trump goes on live television and denounces his racist campaign to delegitimize the first African-American President and offer an apology this matter will not come to an end. Instead what the campaign has done by releasing this statement is to assure the subject will be page one news for the next 24 to 48 hour news cycle.
Once again for the record: Trump is still a "birther" and neither Hillary Clinton nor her campaign ever uttered a single birther theory let alone start the whole racist campaign.
