Donald Trump Says Something Stupid # 35: Military Suicides Only Happen To Servicemembers Who "Can't Handle It" (VIDEO)

During a panel interview at a newly created political group called Retired American Warriors PAC in Herndon, Virginia Donald Trump suggested that American soldiers and veterans who commit suicide do so because they "can't handle" the post-traumatic stress of war.

The number of suicides in the military has risen alarmingly in the past several years so naturally Trump was asked how as President he would approach this issues such as PTSD and if he would support spiritual counseling for veterans affected by them. In his answer Trump implied that veterans who are “strong” don’t suffer from such afflictions...

"When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat and they see things that maybe a lot of folks in this room have seen many times over and you're strong and you can handle it but a lot of people can't handle it. They see horror stories, they see events you couldn't see in a movie, nobody would believe it,"

To say you believe only “strong” servicemen and women “can handle” combat without suffering from PTSD or needing mental-health treatment and imply that veterans with PTSD are somehow weak is to have a profound misunderstanding of the basic issue. This is ignorance at it's highest.

It is also stigmatizing and dangerous. Implying a link between mental illness and weakness like Trump does here will ultimately prevent others from getting help that they need and will result in more soldiers taking their lives.

The Trump campaign, in an attempt at damage control, trotted out his "military" adviser and retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn accused the media reporting on Trump's comments of, acting as...

"the propaganda arm of Hillary Clinton."

Speaking of Clinton and the media, I don't believe it was either of them that said POWs aren't real heroes or implied that they had made sacrifices akin to Gold Star Families who lost their loved ones in war or dodged the military draft five times.
