The gunman was later identified as a 22 year old member of Ankara’s riot police squad, Mevlut Mert Altintas.
Altintas can be seen in video footage sporting a dark suit and tie, waving a pistol and shouting in Arabic...
“God is great! Those who pledged allegiance to Muhammad for jihad. God is great!”
Then he switched to Turkish and shouted...
“Don’t forget Aleppo, don’t forget Syria! Step back! Step back! Only death can take me from here.”
Here are two videos of the assault. Warning they are graphic and upsetting...

Karlov was later killed in a shootout with other Turkish officers.
At least three others were wounded in the assault on the ambassador.
Senior Turkish government official described the well-planned killing as...
“fully professional, not a one-man action”
President Vladimir Putin of Russia said on Russian television that Mr. Karlov had been “despicably killed” to sabotage ties with Turkey. Mr. Putin who spoke to the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan have both agreed to cooperate in investigating the killing.
Both Putin and Erdogan have publicly agreed that the assassination was committed in an attempt to derail efforts by Turkey and Russia to collaborate more closely on regional issues and economic ties.
It must be noted that the assassination came just days after prolonged protests by Turks angered by Russia’s support for the Syrian government in the conflict as well as the Russian's role in the killings and destruction in Aleppo.
Local news reports said that Mr. Altintas’s parents, sister, three other relatives and his roommate had been arrested and that a computer had been confiscated from their house.
Ambassador Karlov’s body was flown home to Moscow after an emotional ceremony was held at Ankara Airport attended by Turkish government officials and diplomats.
• Update: Experts in middle eastern terrorism have pointed out that the assassins language after killing the Ambassador where he pledges allegiance to "the Prophet Muhammad" may give us an idea to what terrorist group the man aligns himself with. This is because that is not language ISIS uses as they always pledge allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, their leader. However, the shooters words betray what may be his allegiance to Al-Qaeda who does use this language and also has ties to the city Aleppo which the assassin references.
