But when you ask those same Republicans how they feel towards the Affordable Care Act (PS - It's the same thing) their response is polar opposite. They simply love so many of the things in the ACA. There's the "No penalty for existing pre-conditions" and "getting to stay on your parent's plan until you're 26". The only part that they really seem to hate is the fact that they have to pay for those things.
Oh yeah, and the part about it being enacted by a black President.
And so begins the dilemma for the Republicans. How can they get rid of Obamacare but still keep the Affordable Care Act... and also make it free.
Here's the answer: You can't.
Getting rid of Obamacare is easy just change the name to Trumpcare and all's good. But then there is the problem of paying for the thing.
Since Trump and the Republicans promised all of America the biggest taxs cut in the history of tax cuts you can't pay for it that way.
You can't borrow from China because y'know it's China, plus the deficit and all.
A single payer universal health care system where a “single payer” fund, rather than private insurers, pays for health care costs... HAH! Yeah right!
So how do they untangle themselves from this conundrum?
GOT IT! Tie the Obamacare repeal bill to defunding Planned Parenthood!
Now how would that solve the problem you ask. Easy. Everybody and their uncle knows that a woman's right to choose what to do with her body is almost religious dogma to the Democratic Party. They also know that if they try to kill Planned Parenthood the Democrats will fight that to the death.
Problem solved. All the Republicans have to do is tell their constituents that they tried to get rid of Obamacare but the Democrats (and maybe a few rogue Republicans) blocked us at every pass.
So that's just what they did.
This morning House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) told members of a press conference that Republicans will pass an Obamacare repeal bill and that they would add an amendment that would defund Planned Parenthood...
“Planned Parenthood legislation would be in our reconciliation bill,”
And the Democrats took the bait! A group of Senate Democrats hastily convened a news conference to respond to the Ryan's pronouncement.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she’s not surprised the GOP is going after women’s reproductive rights as part of its Obamacare repeal...
“This is a priority for the Republicans. So I just would like to speak individually to women across America: This is about respect for you, for your judgment about your personal decisions in terms of your reproductive needs, the size and timing of your family, and the rest, not to be determined by the insurance company or by the Republican, ideological, right-wing caucus in the House of Representatives."
Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.)
"This is outrageous. We are going to fight back every step of the way."
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) was more blunt, saying Ryan’s plan is a...
“disgraceful assault on women’s health.”
So Democrats will try to stop this bill at all costs... Y'know like the GOP did for everything President Obama tried.
And in the end, like everything from Gitmo to putting Merrick Garland on the Supreme Court, Obamacare repeal will not pass, Democrats will be to blame and Republicans will be off the hook.
In conclusion we would just like to point out that the "Hyde Amendment" already bans federal dollars (i.e. - Obamacare) from going towards abortions and that the overwhelming majority of Planned Parenthood’s services involve testing for and treating sexually transmitted diseases, providing birth control, screening for breast cancer and offering other women’s health care.
