FBI Director Comey Debunks Trump's Wiretapping Lie And Confirms Investigation Into Ties Between Trump And Russia (2 VIDEOS)

FBI director James Comey broke some news today. FBI director James Comey broke the news Donald Trump is a liar. A liar who is under FBI investigation.

In front of a packed House Intelligence Committee Comey confirmed both that Donald Trump lied when he alleged that President Obama "had his wires tapped" in Trump Towers and that the FBI has had an open investigation into Trump's ties to Russian government officials ongoing since July.

Comey started off the hearing by addressing both subjects in his opening statement.

As for Trump's moronic claim of wiretapping Comey stated that he had no evidence that could back up the president’s allegations...

With respect to the president’s tweets about alleged wiretapping directed at him by the prior administration, I have no information that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI. The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answer is the same for the Department of Justice and all its components, the department has no information that supports those tweets.

Once that bit idiocy was dismissed it was time to drop the bombshell.

In the same opening statement Comey confirmed the existence of an investigation into possible ties between Donald Trump, his associates and Russian government officials. The formal confirmation of the probe came as a shock to those in attendance despite months of news reports quoting anonymous government officials discussing the FBI-led, multi-agency probe into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia in the lead-up to the 2016 election.

Comey told the House panel ...

“I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election. And that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts. As with any counterintelligence investigation this will also include an assessment whether any crimes were committed"

Here is a video of that segment of Comey's testimony...

Comey's revelation that the investigation was opened back in June 2016 means that the probe was underway during the height of the effort by Moscow to tip the scale in favor of Trump during the election. This admission has led to some very angry Democrats who remember all to well that Comey had no problem discussing the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clintons emails throughout the presidential campaign.

Why would Comey feel it appropriate to discuss one investigation openly and then hide the existence of the other one until today?

The intelligence community did however publicly share it's assessment in January, well after the election, that the Russian government had hacked the DNC and Democratic operatives releasing damaging information with the goal of helping Trump win the election.

Once again, too little too late.

Later in Comey's testimony when asked to to speculate on how long it would take to conduct the investigation he declined saying only that it was nowhere near completion and that the eight-month period in which the investigation has been ongoing is a “fairly short period of time” for a counterintelligence investigation.

Great. That means it will be months if not longer without an answer or resolution to this horror show.
