The incident began at about 2:40 p.m. when an as of yet unidentified man used a car to run down pedestrians on the Westminster Bridge. Three police officers were among those injured on the bridge.
The driver then rammed his car into the Parliament gates, exited the vehicle and fatally stabbed a police officer as he tried to enter the building.
The attacker was then shot and killed by police.
The attack is believed to be an act of Islamist-inspired terrorism.
Police also indicated they know the identity of the assailant.
Three police officers, several French teenagers on a school trip, two Romanian tourists, and five South Koreans were among the casualties.
Today's assault was the first mass-casualty terrorist attack in Britain since 2005 when 52 people and four attackers died in the July 7 bomb attacks on the London public transportation system.
The London assault comes on the one-year anniversary of the ISIS bomb attacks in Brussels.
