SURPRISE! Trump Loves NATO Now, No longer Believes "It Is Obsolete" (TWEETS)

Donald Trump, in a complete 180, no longer believes Nato is "obsolete". This is a night and day shift from the position he held as little as a week and a half ago.

This seismic shift for Trump has taken place seemingly overnight despite his taking every chance he could throughout his presidential campaign to repeatedly say that NATO was not only obsolete but we could do without the institution altogether.

Here are just a few examples.

On March 24th 2016 Trump dropped these tweets slamming NATO...

Trump, then a candidate, echoed his tweets on ABC News "This Week" a few days later...

"NATO is obsolete, And it's extremely expensive to the United States, disproportionately so. And we should readjust NATO. And it's going to have to be either readjusted to take care of terrorism or we're going to have to set up a new -- a new coalition, a new group of countries to handle terrorism because terrorism is out of control."

Then on a Fox News Town Hall in April 2016 Trump said of NATO...

It’s obsolete. We spend too much money. We’re not getting the benefits that we should be getting for the money,

A year ago, at a campaign rally in Wisconsin, Trump promised he would tell NATO’s other member nations...

Fellas, you haven’t paid for years. Give us the money or get the hell out. Get out.

Trump told NBC News in July 2016...

We have countries within NATO that are taking advantage of us. With me, I believe they’re going to pay,

In an interview with the New York Times, the then President–elect framed the issue this way...

"If we cannot be properly reimbursed for the tremendous cost of our military protecting other countries, and in many cases the countries I’m talking about are extremely rich -- Then yes, I would be absolutely prepared to tell those countries, ‘Congratulations, you will be defending yourself,"

During a visit to the White House last month from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Trump raised the issue with her about Germany’s NATO commitments. He tweeted the following day: “Germany owes...

But on Wednesday, appearing beside NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at a White House news conference, Trump said...

I said it was obsolete. It’s no longer obsolete.

Wait, WHAT?!?!

The reasoning behind trump's about face was his claim that he had gotten various nations to increase their NATO spending and that he had made the 28-nation alliance start paying attention to terrorism.

Trump clearly does not understand now Nato works

Each member state helps pay for the organization’s bureaucratic costs, but those costs are insignificant compared to the real reason NATO exists. The institution, created to keep communism and the Germans at bay after WWII, was formed under the agreement that...

"an armed attack against any one of them in Europe or North America would be considered an attack against them all"

As for members paying their "fair share" most NATO countries, including the United States, cut back on military spending following the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. But in 2014, following Russian aggression in Ukraine and the rise of the Islamic State terrorist group on the border of member nation Turkey, NATO members agreed to increase their defense spending to 2 percent of their gross domestic product by 2024.

Germany, for instance, has committed to ratcheting up its spending to 2 percent of GDP by 2024, a decision Trump praised Merkel for during a joint press conference at the White House last month.

Trump apparently believes he and he alone is the reason for the increased spending as the world does revolve solely around him.
