To their respective battle stations went General Counselor Kellyanne Conway, Press Secretary Sean "alternative facts" Spicer, Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Secretary Hucabee-Sanders and Vice President Mike Pence all armed with the virtually identical story to cover their boss's corpulent ass.
The story was that after receiving a letter from Attorney General Sessions and an additional report by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein that the agency that Comey ran had lost faith in him due to his handling of the Hillary Clinton private server scandal. The two argued that because of this Coney should be dismissed. It was only after receiving this information did Donald Trump then pull the trigger and dismiss the director.
Though the explanation was met with general disbelief and ridicule as Trump had incessantly praised Comey for his actions involving Clinton's server the Trumpers stuck to their stories.
Then came Donald Trump's interview with NBC News' Lester Holt and the whole thing went sideways.
Trump started the interview insulting Comey by calling him a “showboat” and a “grandstander.” and that the FBI had been “in turmoil” for more than a year and hadn’t recovered.
Then it was time to knife his staff in the back.
Trump claimed that he had already made up his mind to fire FBI Director James Comey long before Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein wrote up a memo to justify the decision. When pressed further on the matter by Holt Trump said...
“I was going to fire Comey, my decision. I was going to fire Comey. I was going to fire him regardless of recommendation. He made a recommendation, but regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey.”
From there it only got worse.
Trump then all but admitted the real reason he fired Comey...
“In fact, when I decided to just do it, I said to myself, I said, ‘You know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story, it’s an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.’”
This additional statement by Trump not only contradicts the White House’s initial account of how he arrived at his decision once again but reveals that the true reason behind Comey's dismissal was his growing anger with the ongoing Russia probe the director was running.
The White House’s claim that Rosenstein’s letter and Session’s recommendation had triggered Comey’s firing was blown to bits.
Here is the complete interview...
To make matters worse it is now being reported that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein had threatened to quit if the White House didn’t stop blaming him for the firing.
This has now officially turned into an unmitigated shit-show.
