Donald Trump gave yet another hate filled gift to his right wing conservative base on Friday.
Along with his pardoning of the disgraced racist sheriff Joe Arpaio Trump also signed a directive banning transgender men or women from enlisting in the military.
Trump, a five time draft dodger, didn't want to be bothered (or tagged) with the task of determining whether to remove already enlisted transgender individuals from service so he bequeathed that job to his Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
Trump has only given Mattis until Jan. 1st to determine whether active transgender military servicemen should be removed from their posts.
The presidential memoorandum also bars the military from funding gender confirmation surgery due to what Trump has referred to as "it's tremendous medical costs". A canard that has been disproven over and over again most recently in a 2016 paper by the Rand Corporation titled “Assessing the Implications of Allowing Transgender Personnel to Serve Openly”. The study concluded that the health care cost increase would amount to a 0.04 to 0.13 percent increase in total active component health care expenditures.
FACT CHECK: In 2014 the Department of Defense spent more than $84 million on Viagra and other medications to treat erectile dysfunction. That is over five times the amount it would cost for the gender confirmation surgeries Trump spoke of.
In 2016, under the Obama administration, the Pentagon lifted a longtime ban on transgender service members. At the time, then-Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said...
“Our mission is to defend this country, and we don’t want barriers unrelated to a person’s qualification to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who can best accomplish the mission.”
In July, Trump blindsided his administration and the Pentagon when reinstated the ban on transgender service members via his Twitter account...
The White House offered no guidance at the time as to how the ban would be implemented, leaving transgender service members wondering about their future in the military.
They need wonder no longer.
In a nauseatingly ironic twist, in his weekly address, Trump praised active military service members and veterans saying...
“Every person who puts on the uniform makes our nation proud. They all come from across our land. They represent every race, ethnicity and creed. But they all pledge the same oath, fight for the same cause and operate as one team — with one shared sense of purpose. They love their families. They cherish their freedom. They salute our flag. And, above all, they believe in America.”
To be fair to Trump we all know someone wrote that for him and he just read it off the teleprompter.
