Trump's Promise To End The “American Carnage” Was A Lie As Gun Deaths Rise 12% During His Time In Office

"What the hell do you have to lose?"

Remember the first time you heard Trump go off on his "inner city" riff about how he would solve all the violence in what the conservatives like to call "the urban" areas of out great country?

He'd yell to his all white rallygoers...

"I'll be able to make sure that when you walk down the street in your inner city, or wherever you are, you're not gonna be shot. Your child isn't gonna be shot."

Trump would then add for emphasis "What the hell do you have to lose?"

Trump even gave a modified rendition of it at his inaugural address when he read off his teleprompter that...

"this American carnage stops right here and stops right now!"

Despite his dog whistle laden promises the numbers from the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit that tracks shootings via media reports and law enforcement records, show that in the first 200 days of 2017 the carnage has only gotten worse....

• Gun deaths are up over 12 percent year-over-year.

• Firearm injuries are up nearly 8 percent.

• Children under the age of 12 shot by a gun has increased by 16 percent.

• Instances of defensive gun use are up nearly 30 percent.

In the first 200 days of 2014 the Archive's team of researchers tallied 6,206 gun deaths, not counting suicides and yet three years later that figure has jumped by well over one-third, to 8,539 fatalities.

Since 2014, total firearm injuries are up 50 percent. Shootings of children are up by nearly 30 percent. Reports of defensive gun use have doubled.

Trump's rhetoric aside, there's little a president can do in his first six months in office to influence violent crime trends in any direction making Trump's demonization of President Obama and his false promises so much more repulsive.

As far as any action Trump has taken to help the people besieged by gun violence is to have his Attorney General Jeff Sessions increase the use of mandatory minimum prison sentences, boost the use of civil asset forfeiture to take property from suspects before they're convicted or charged with wrongdoing, and threaten to withhold federal funding from "sanctuary cities."

Of course none of these interventions will have the effect on gun violence as research has shown mandatory minimum sentences have little deterrent effect on violent crime, asset forfeiture had no effect on violent crime and cracking down on "sanctuary cities" may even turn out to be counterproductive, as research has shown they tend to be less violent than cities without such policies in place.

These policies seem to be implemented to appease his rabid anti-minority and anti-immigrant base.

So what the hell do they have to lose?... Only their freedom, their property and their lives.
