FACT CHECK: Donald Trump Told Sooooo Many Lies During His State Of The Union Address!!! Let's Review!

It turns out that Donald Trump told so many lies during his 2018 State of the Union address he actually crashed the fact checking service PoltiFact due to an overflow of traffic.

PolitiFact actually had to tweet in the middle of Trump’s first SOTU.

The lies came fast and furious from the stage at the SOTU. What is more impressive is that Trump was reading from a teleprompter. This means that he either signed off on the bald face lies or that he hadn't even read the finished product and just decided to read it sight unseen without verifying what was in the speech.

Either way it was hard to keep up with the liar in chief as he wove together half truths, exaggerations and outright lies together in a tapestry of bullshit that was impossible to decipher.

A look at some of Trump's untruthful statements from the speech and how they stack up against the truth...

1) Trump said in the SOTU...

"We enacted the biggest tax cuts and reform in American history."

The Truth...

An analysis by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget in the fall put Trump's package as the eighth biggest since 1918. Reagan's 1981 cut is the biggest

2) Trump said in the SOTU...

"After years and years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages."

The Truth...

Wages are not rising any faster than they have before. Average hourly pay rose 2.5 percent in 2017, slightly slower than the 2.9 percent increase recorded in 2016 under President Barack Obama.

3) Trump said in the SOTU...

"The third pillar (of the immigration plan) ends the visa lottery, a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard to skill, merit or the safety of our people."

The Truth...

The diversity visa program that awards green cards every year to people from underrepresented countries requires applicants to have completed a high school education or have at least two years of experience in the last five years in a selection of fields identified by the Labor Department. Applicants who have met the pre-conditions and have submitted to extensive background checks are then randomly selected by computer.

4) Trump said in the SOTU...

"We have ended the war on American energy."

The Truth...

Energy production was unleashed under President Obama with advances in hydraulic fracturing making it economical to tap vast reserves of natural gas. As a matter of fact the cleaner and cheaper production of natural gas is why the mining of coal fell out of favor. Oil production also greatly increased, reducing imports. Before Trump's election the U.S. was for the first time in decades getting more energy domestically than it imported.

5) Trump said in the SOTU...

"We are now very proudly an exporter of energy to the world."

The Truth...

The U.S. has long exported all sorts of energy even while importing it. The U.S. however is still not a net exporter of energy though.

6) Trump said in the SOTU...

"For decades, open borders have allowed drugs and gangs to pour into our most vulnerable communities."

The Truth...

Under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama the Border Patrol roughly doubled. While Bush extended fencing to cover nearly one-third of the border during his final years in office President Obama deported over 2.5 million immigrants - more than any previous administration.

7) Trump said in the SOTU...

Unemployment claims have hit a 45-year low. And something I’m very proud of — African-American unemployment stands at the lowest rate ever recorded,

The Truth...

While black unemployment did reach a new low this year it was President Barack Obama that cut black unemployment in half, from 16.8 percent to 7.8 percent during his administration. Under Trump’s administration black unemployment rate has fallen just one point, from 7.8 percent to 6.8 percent.

8) Trump said in the SOTU...

"In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds of dangerous terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield, including the ISIS leader, al-Baghdadi,"

The Truth...

According to a March 2017 report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, 121 former detainees of Guantanamo Bay were confirmed to have returned to terrorist activities. Of the 121 who were confirmed to have returned to terrorism, 113 would have been released during the George W. Bush presidency.

As for Trump's claim that the U.S. released the man who would become the leader of ISIS is somewhat misleading. The man known as Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was released into Iraqi custody in 2004, not set free by the U.S.

9) Trump said in the SOTU...

"In recent weeks, two terrorist attacks in New York were made possible by the visa lottery and chain migration. In the age of terrorism, these programs present risks we can no longer afford,"

The Truth...

The two suspects of recent terror attacks in New York entered thanks to a family connection and the diversity visa lottery program, but both were radicalized well after they entered the United States, making them homegrown threats. The suspects had been living and working in the U.S. for several years.

10) Trump said in the SOTU...

"Under the current broken system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives. Under our plan, we focus on the immediate family by limiting sponsorships to spouses and minor children. This vital reform is necessary, not just for our economy, but for our security, and for the future of America,"

The Truth...

Legal immigrants can sponsor their spouses, children, parents, and siblings but distant relatives, like cousins, cannot be sponsored for residency. In addition the family reunification visa process takes years or even more than a decade, preventing "chains" from forming the way Trump suggested.

11) Trump said in the SOTU...

"Since the election, we have created 2.4 million new jobs, including 200,000 new jobs in manufacturing alone. After years of wage stagnation, we are finally seeing rising wages."

The Truth...

In Trump’s first year the U.S. only added 2.06 million jobs to the economy. This is the slowest year of job growth in six years. Wages were not stagnate as they have been rising steadily for years.

12) Trump said in the SOTU...

"Our massive tax cuts provide tremendous relief for the middle class and small business,"

The Truth...

While the middle class does get a tax cut under the new law like corporations and the richest 1%  those cuts for the middle class are not permanent. Ultimately, taxes for middle income families are set to expire causing an an across the board tax increase. The cuts for corporations and the richest 1% will remain in tact however.

13) Trump said in the SOTU...

"We must get much tougher on drug dealers and pushers if we are going to succeed in stopping this scourge. My administration is committed to fighting the drug epidemic and helping get treatment for those in need.  The struggle will be long and difficult — but, as Americans always do, we will prevail.

The Truth...

The Trump administration’s fight against the opioid epidemic has essentially been confined to merely declaring a state of emergency. Trump has not declared additional funding to fight the opioid crisis, or heeded the advice of his own Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis. Trump has also refused to reduce the price for governmental units of naloxone, a lifesaving overdose drug nor has he worked to reduce pricing for effective medication-assisted treatments. The Trump administration has also refused to make it easier for doctors to prescribe buprenorphine, an addiction treatment drug.

14) Trump said in the SOTU...

"We repealed the core of the disastrous Obamacare — the individual mandate is now gone."

The Truth...

The individual mandate remains in effect and people who go without insurance are still subject to fines this year. Despite Trump's repeated attacks and deliberate sabotaging of Obamacare the law remains popular among Americans, with nearly 9 million people enrolling during the six-week registration window last year.

*As the fact checking is still proceeding this post has become a work in progress as it were.
