The greater Manchester Police responded to reports of an explosion at the Manchester Arena around 10:35 p.m. local time.
Manchester Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said early Tuesday that the attack was carried out by a lone assailant who died at the scene. Initial reports said he carried an improvised explosive device near the arena and detonated.
Hopkins said of the attack...
“We have been treating this as a terrorist incident and we believe that while the attack last night was conducted by one man, the priority is to establish whether he was acting alone or as part of a network,”
Manchester Arena representatives said in a statement that the explosion took place outside the venue near a ticket selling area.
Several media outlets have reported witnesses saw 20 to 30 people lying on the ground.
Witnesses said the concert audience included many children.
