OBSTRUCTION: Trump Asked The Director Of National Intelligence To Get Comey To Shut Down Flynn Investigation

According to The Washington Post Donald Trump asked Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats to convince former FBI director James Comey to back off on the investigation into his former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

After a briefing of other officials Trump asked them all to leave except for DNI Coats and CIA Director Mike Pompeo. With the room cleared Coats reported that Trump began ranting about the way that Comey was handling the investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign colluded with Russia during and after the 2016 election.

It was then that Trump made his move.

The March 22 request came after less than a week on the job for Coates.

Coats reportedly told his associates that during the meeting and took contemporaneous memos of the interaction.

Coats, believing the request was inappropriate, decided against it.

A day or two after Trump followed his previous request with a phone call to Coates now asking him to make a public statement saying that there was no evidence that his campaign coordinated with the Russians.

Coats once again declined.

Coats is scheduled to testify on Wednesday before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
